About Course

Want to see hedgehogs in your garden? This course shows you how to make a hedgehog friendly garden, step by step.

Hedgehogs are in trouble. In many places their numbers have dropped a lot in the last few decades. The good news is that gardens can make a real difference. Together, our gardens cover a huge area, and a hedgehog can travel through many of them in one night.

In this beginner-friendly course, you learn how to turn your garden into a safe place for hedgehogs and other wildlife. It works wherever you live, for all 19 hedgehog species, and it also explains what to do if hedgehogs aren’t native in your country. You don’t need any experience, a big garden or a big budget.

You will learn:

  • how hedgehogs live, what they eat and how their year changes with your climate
  • how to find out if a hedgehog visits your garden, with your own footprint tunnel
  • how to check your garden, make a 13 x 13 cm hedgehog highway and get your neighbours on board
  • what food and water to give, and what you should never give
  • how to build a Hedgehog Dome or a wooden hedgehog house, and where to put it
  • how native plants, hedges, wild corners, safe ponds and chemical-free gardening bring in hedgehog food
  • how to avoid garden dangers, like mowers, strimmers, bonfires, netting, drains, pets and roads
  • what to do in each season, and how to leave resting hedgehogs in peace
  • how to recognise a hedgehog in trouble, give first aid and find a rescue near you
  • how to record sightings and get your street and community involved

This course is for you if:

  • you have a garden, big or small, and want to help wildlife
  • you love hedgehogs and want to know how to support them
  • you are new to wildlife gardening and want clear, practical steps
  • you are a school, community garden or allotment group

Included: 8 chapters, 34 short text lessons, a course summary, and 8 printable downloads, such as a garden checklist, a food card, house plans and a garden calendar. At the end, you have your own hedgehog garden action plan, ready to use.
