This course takes you on a journey to learn about the very basics of genetics, it’s history through the eyes of Mendell and how to implement your newfound knowledge about inheritance forms through using the Punnett square. It’s a lot of ground to cover in a beginners course, but you can do it! Using a lot of visual examples, this course is an excellent way to learn more about how to use genetics in your breeding program.
Access:
Purchase gives you 52 weeks of access to complete the course and take the quizzes in order to achieve the certificate of completion. After these 52 weeks, you cannot retake quizzes to get your grade up, but you can still access the lessons to look back at the information. Course Curriculum
-
1. What is genetics?
In this chapter you'll learn about the very basics of genetics, the different parts that contain genetic information in DNA and about the importance of pedigrees and the use of them when working with genetics.
-
2. Mendells inheritance
Farmers had already used breeding to get certain features in their animals for millennia, when Gregor Johann Mendell discovered genetic patterns in his cultivation of peas and documented it. In this chapter you'll learn everything about this priest from the Austrian Empire (now Czech Republic).
-
3. Modern inheritance forms
This chapter describes the modern inheritance forms, which include both the inheritance forms according to Gregor Johann Mendel and the inheritance forms discovered through science after his posthumous recognition.
-
4. Punnett square
In the fourth chapter you'll learn about the inventor of the calculation tool for genetics: Reginald Crundall Punnett. He invented the Punnett square to calculate basic genetics, which you'll learn to use in this chapter, along with a few calculation practices.
-
5. African pygmy hedgehog colors
In the fifth chapter, you will learn about the specific mutations in African Pygmy Hedgehogs. We've chosen this species because it's the most popular in captivity all around the world, but also because it is the only species with limited research into their genetics. This research is made by us at The Hedgehog Program, using all of the methods you've learned in this course so far! At the end of the chapter you'll learn to calculate specific colors in African Pygmy hedgehogs.
